Tuition Available Through the FMSP

The FMSP supports schools and colleges by providing tuition for students who would benefit from studying AS/A level Further Mathematics. When schools/colleges have difficulties staffing/timetabling Further Mathematics, or have students wishing to study units which are not part of the main provision offered by the school/college, the FMSP can provide all or part of the tuition for Further Mathematics.

The main support provided is Live Interactive Lectures for Further Mathematics (LIL FM). This is an online lecture course with extensive online materials that can be used by schools and colleges to supplement their own Further Mathematics provision.

Where schools/colleges are unable to teach Further Mathematics, even with LIL FM, the FMSP can provide supporting tuition either from a visiting tutor or via Live Online Tuition. Your FMSP Area Coordinator is your first point of contact to discuss how best the FMSP can provide this support. Contact details for your Area Coordinator can be found on the relevant regional page.

Live Interactive Lectures (LIL)

These online lecture courses are designed to supplement the teaching and tutorial support provided in schools/colleges and a student's own independent study.

Each series of lectures introduces the key content of a module and students have access to recordings of the lectures for revision. In addition students have access to extensive, purpose-written online resources.

LIL is an excellent resource for schools/colleges which are teaching Further Mathematics on a reduced timetable; however the lectures do require follow-up tutorials and support by a mathematics teacher in the school/college.

For further information please see Live Interactive Lectures for Further Mathematics.

Face-to-face tuition

Where a school/college is unable to support LIL FM in-house the FMSP can provide an expert tutor to do this, delivering a structured learning programme, including revision sessions. The students have access to extensive, purpose-written online resources.

  • The FMSP tutor is normally linked to the school's/college's local FMSP region.
  • The FMSP tutor liaises with a contact in the school's/college's Mathematics department.
  • The FMSP tutor visits students in their school/college, or in some cases students attend lessons at a local university, or at a local school or college

  • Live Online Tuition (LOT)

In circumstances where it is not practical to arrange face-to-face tuition, the FMSP provides real-time online tutorials to support LIL FM sessions. Students log in to the online classroom and can interact with FMSP tutor during the lessons using audio-conferencing and a graphics tablet. The sessions are designed to support the LIL FM sessions and are followed up with additional exercises and e-mail support from the tutor. Students have access to extensive, purpose-written online resources.

For information about online tuition please see Live online tuition.

    Student Guide

The FMSP Student Guide gives more detailed information.

Independent evaluation of students' results, carried out by the Curriculum, Evaluation and Management (CEM) Centre at the University of Durham, has shown that results achieved by students tutored in this way are indistinguishable from those achieved by students taught by their own school or college.

Feedback from students has also been very positive.
